Review of Hotel Petrus in Kronplatz.

The Hotel Petrus is located in Riscone, in one of the bases for Kronplatz ski resort, just outside of Brunico in Val Pusteria It is a lovely family hotel run by three sisters (Brigitte, Christina and Daniela Aichner) and their parents (Hans and Gerti). They are very much involved in making you feel welcome. From taking you hiking or playing golf, to skiing and making you feel at home away from home.
I had the chance to go and visit it last week and I was very impressed, definitely somewhere I’ll suggest people to go.
Kronplatz is a very interesting mountain, looks like a Panetone punched in the middle. It is famous for its good snow and long runs to the four resort villages. Also it is a great viewing point of all the Dolomites, you see what is Dolomites and what is Alps from the top. And is renown also for its two museums – the Messner Mountain Museum Corones, which design was created by the late Zaha Hadid, and the new LUMEN Museum of photography, created on a disused tram top station.
The Hotel Petrus is 5’ by transfer from the base of Riscone, and if you can ski down a black run, it is ski in as well. A transfer offers rides every 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon to go to the base area.
The Petrus is decorated in clear pine wood with very airy and lovely open spaces, as well as very beautiful rooms. There are 32 rooms and 18 suites, lots of different types of rooms (13), but many have an open airy space, some with sauna inside.
The new bar and restaurant area are really inviting. In the entrance there is a big table used for friends to gather after a day of skiing or mountain biking or golfing if in the summer, or for some wine tastings. The cave is next door with a great selection of wines to discover.
There are two restaurants in the hotel – the Restaurant “Kaminstube” has been awarded Gault & Millau points.
The Dahòame spa is wonderful, and uses the power of nature found in wood, wool and herbs to reinvigorate tired muscles. The Swiss pine, known in Val Pusteria as Zirm, does wonders for the health and it has a calming effect on one’s circulation and lowers people’s heart rate, plus the lovely scent relaxes the whole body. A 25-metre pool at 30C is indoor and part outdoor. Five different saunas and steam baths are in the spa area: The Wood sauna is the largest one at 85C to make one sweat. The Ban sauna heats up to 85C. The Fiori sudatory heats up to 65C and uses rose petals and herbs from their Lechnerhof, giving the sauna a lovely smell. The Brine steam bath “Sole” heated at 45C with mountain salt is very good for people’s airways and their “Bio” sauna is a textile sauna, meaning that children are allowed, and users may wear a bikini or swimming trunks: it is located in the pool area outside of the sauna area.
A meeting room is also used as a yoga studio – all in white which is a very calming space. Rooms start from EUR 142.

We have already covered many news due to this latest spat of snow storms in Europe, as the hotel that was hit by an avalanche of 300 meters of width in Eastern Switzerland. In the same place, a couple days later, a second avalanche affected the structure of the Säntis Suspension Railway. And two ski patrollers got killed setting avalanche control charges in the French resort of Morillon in the Grand Massif. Also two workers died in Jammu in the Gulmarg in India, when they’ve fallen from a cable car during a mock rescue drill.

Another classic resort, such as St Moritz has been in the news for its famous Cresta Run be opened again for women after a 89 years ban.

A last one to report was now in Stowe, VT, with more than 150 stuck skiers and boarders that have to wait up to two and a half hours to offload. Recently a British skier was killed after suffering a cardiac arrest on a chairlift falling 32 feet to the ground in Méribel resort in Les Trois Vallées. Three Germans have been killed by an avalanche near Lech and a fourth is missing. Two were caught in an inbounds avalanche near Kachina Peak in Taos and taken to hospital. 7 were killed as a helicopter and a light aircraft crashed over the Ruitor Glacier near la Thuile in the Italian Alps. Two were killed by an avalanche in St Christoph-en-Oisans in the French Alps.
