Christmas is coming and now we are starting to freak out that we need to sort out what to purchase for those we love. If they are madly in love with skiing or boarding, now that in the Northern Hemisphere is getting cold, what better idea than purchasing something snow/ski/boarding related?

Here are some things I am coming up with that I would not mind myself as my own presents, so I hope you could shop for those you love, or if not, get something for yourself- because at the end of the day, you are worth it!

Cushions: I insist on them and bought four – they are not the cheapest, but they are lovely, these cushions of dog skiers to decorate your ski pad (or your home in the city, just to think about the mountains) – There are lots of different models, from Etsy.

Val Thorens, the highest and more snow-reliable resort in the massive Trois Vallées of France is hosting as every year the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup, which will kick off on 6-7 December with 30 women and 70 men facing each other on the slopes. Within the international line up we’ll have two Britons: Emma Peters and Oliver Davies.

The village of Val Thorens gets very busy this weekend with cheering fans and competitors alike. If you want to view the action, a great spot is on the ‘Jean-Fred Chapuis’ slope, named after the French Olympic champion and Val Thorens local.

During the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup, teams of four compete coming down a course full of bumps and jumps. It is very interesting to see how they make it down (if they do and do not crash on the way) and who makes it first. Obviously, it is lots of fun, even though deep down, people wish the riders to have some falls (I guess not getting hurt!). But this race is definitely not for the faint hearted!

I had the chance to read ‘The Skier’s Gift Book that’s Sweeping the Globe (Sort of)- Second Edition by Dan Cody. This is a candid recount of what you have to take into account when starting or getting better at skiing.

We skiers are all a special bunch. If we love the sport, we can’t wait till the next time we are up the mountain with our skis on, waiting to do those turns. But to get to know what you are doing, there are lots of things that have to happen first. Like how to dress, how to get comfortable ski boots and good skis, how to get to the resort in one piece, how to carry your equipment without looking like a broken helicopter, how not to finish skiing with the village idiot and so on.

I have been sorting our ski gear today, measuring my kids pants and seeing if their ski boots where still ok for their feet, and doing some adjustments on them. This is the third season on the same boots and I just have to change the settings on the boots of my youngest to the third position, whereas my eldest still is in the same setting. I am thinking that he has been skiing with big boots for some seasons now! They seem to be ok, and he still have four settings to change in his Roces boots…. Here is a post of the Roces boots if you want to read more on them.

But while looking at my boxes where I put away all our ski gear and clothing, I’ve found some things that I really used over the years.

Here is a list of them and how they can be of use for you on this coming season.

The Roces ski boots of my kids just needed a bit of setting adjustment and now we are ready for a new ski season. Ozzy was overlooking the grand tasks! 7 things that can help you when taking kids skiing.

  • Walkie Talkies- A good pair of walkie talkies stuffed inside a sock and guarded into an interior pocket of your jacket is great for communicating with kids. You need to keep the walkie talkies warm, because the battery can die quickly when it is cold. They are great to communicate with your kids, or from kid to kid when they are having some time off, maybe not the best if skiing down at speed I would say- same restrictions should apply as those for driving and using a mobile phone- basically, don’t use them while skiing!

Pinzolo, the area connected to Madonna di Campiglio and all the Skirama Dolomiti (the massive carousel of resorts to the West of the Brennero Road that goes from Verona to Innsbruck in the Trentino Province), has opened its first five stars luxury hotel, the Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti.

This ‘jewel of luxury’ is the second of the Lefay Resorts, after the Lefay Resort & Spa at Lake Garda in Gargagno opened in 2008. The resort is centered on the theme of wellness and sustainability in a luxury setting.  Even though the largest region of Madonna di Campiglio, Pinzolo and Val Rendena, with the Adamello Presanella group and the Brenta Dolomites has already four of the six 5-star hotels in the Trentino province, this hotel is the first one to earn the five-star luxury classification.

Stay at the Heart of the Valdigne to ski in Courmayeur, La Thuile and Pila/Aosta

The outside of the apartment in Morgex that we've finished buying. My experience of buying a home in the Italian Alps.

Stay at the Heart of the Valdigne (Il Cuore della Valdigne) to ski in Courmayeur, La Thuile and Pila/Aosta for your ski or summer holiday.

The Aosta Valley is magnificent from wherever you look at it. Great mountains, from the Mont Blanc, Monte Cervino (Matterhorn) and Monterosa, to glaciers, rivers, hot springs, lakes, you name it.

Living room at Il Cuore della Valdigne. Stay at the Heart of the Valdigne to ski in Courmayeur, La Thuile and Pila/Aosta.

Having a holiday there is the best way to disconnect from everyday worries, the rat race and why all of us who love the mountains, want to at least, do once a year.

Il Cuore della Valdigne is a beautiful stone and wood apartment in the middle of the Valdigne, the valley of the Mont Blanc, what in my opinion, has the nicest vistas of the Aosta Valley and one of the nicest of the Alps.

Being in the middle of Morgex, just 10’ outside Courmayeur, 3 minutes from the Pré Saint Didier terme (natural hot springs) and 20’ from La Thuile, and to the other side, 25’ to Aosta and the gondola of Pila, the chalet is located in a great strategic location for going skiing, cross country skiing (in Arpy, Val Ferret or Cogne), mountain biking, snow shoeing, winter walking, white water rafting and relaxing in the hot springs.

The apartment has two bedrooms and two bathrooms with showers in two floors, a living room with a double-sided chimney that also opens to the dining room. The wooden kitchen with the slate kitchen top is a delight, with all you need if you fancy doing a big meal. If you don’t, no worries, you are a stone throw away from many bars and restaurants in Morgex: Mont Blanc Café, Café de l’Archet, La Locanda, Trattoria da Bepe, and if you fancy something much more deluxe, the renown Casa Quinson, all within two blocks from the apartment.
