The FIS Camp is a classic event every season, with one version in Europe and one in South America.  The International Ski Federation supports this fantastic camp to create the future World Champions and FIS racers from all over the world.

16 kids, ladies and men spent 21 days in a ski resort in South America; this year it was the chance for EL Colorado, in Chile at the base of the Andes to host the camp. El Colorado is located one hour from Santiago City. It is a great ski resort, with lots of experience in ski racing and race training, which hosted many amazing athletes over the years of the likes of Ilka Stuhec, Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin.

The FIS race camp is about skiing and much more: the camaraderie between the kids and coaches while staying at the same Hotel and sharing ideas and techniques is invaluable and creates a great vibe for the entire group. From 6;45 am breakfast is served, in order to start skiing at 7:30 am for 3-4 hours. Then is time for lunch all together, with a second short session in the afternoon.

This is followed by a tuning session in the afternoon after skiing. “Tuning your own skis is part of the life for a ski racer” says Ivo Bozic Head Coach who together with Chino Martinez both Argentine, coached this camp in 2019.The afternoon also has some physical training, stretching session, bike session, before going to the video movement analysis and watching some good skiing. All this happens before dinner and  having to turn the lights off.

Many countries are represented in this camp: Iran, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Brazil, Latvia, Argentina, Chile, China and Serbia.

“It’s been a dry season with not much snow here at the Central Andes but there are great conditions for ski racing, hard snow and a fast lift serving a race course run where we train every day, which makes our life easy” says Chino Martinez one of the two coaches who spent the last 15 years in Chile.

“It is so great to see this kids sharing ideas and ski every day with a big dream and a goal to one day became a ski racer and be in the Olympics representing their Nations.”

“Thanks to the FIS Ski Federation and Chile Ski Federation for the support and El Colorado ski resort for the hospitality.”

“We are hoping to come back every year for more ski training.”

Read our Focus on South American Ski Resorts here. A new resort is coming to the Malargue region near Las Leñas? Demaclenko is providing the snowmaking to a couple of resorts in South America.

You can read also by El Chino about his skis reviews here and here.

Also he has written about going up to Valle Nevado on the first day this season.

We are waiting for more of his reviews soon! And if going skiing to South America, see what it was the long range forecast by SnowForecast. And we keep on questioning ourselves if the snow in the Northern Hemisphere Resorts correlates with that one on the Southern Hemisphere ones. The Central Andes are having enough snow but they are depending on the snowmaking this year, but the lower Andes of Patagonia seems to be getting the goods!

With so much snow this past year in parts of the USA and Europe, as in the South of South America and Australia/NZ now, you might wonder what is the real risk of avalanches. You can read our interview to Coco Torres, former Head of Operations for Valle de Las Leñas on how that resort takes care of their valley being a very high-risk prone avalanche area.
